SPNC Birding ClubThe Seven Ponds Nature Center Birding Club provides a forum for people to learn about and enjoy birds and birdwatching. Meetings are held at the nature center on the third Tuesday of the month, at 7:00 p.m., except where noted otherwise. There are no meetings in July, August, or December. For additional information about the club, or for a full 2010 schedule of events, please contact the nature center.Peregrine Falcons of Southeast Michigan Tuesday, September 21 Join us as we “visit” several peregrine falcon nest sites in southeast Michigan to learn about the progress toward the restoration of this beautiful species. With the help of Barb Baldinger, a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Peregrine Falcon Volunteer, we will follow the history of each nest site and view close-up photos of nesting parents and their young. Madagascar – Land of the Endangered Tuesday, October 19 Madagascar boasts an interesting collection of birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants. They range from vangas, ground-rollers, and rock-thrushes to lemurs, geckos, chameleons, and baobab trees. While wildlife is varied and very interesting, many of these species are critically endangered and face a very unsure future. Take a look at the wildlife and life on this exotic island off the African coast with Oakland Audubon Society President Don Burlett. Where Eastern Birds meet Western Birds Tuesday, November 16 The Hill Country of Texas is one of our favorite nature center field tour destinations. It is a very birdy area, with lots of spectacular scenery. It provides an interesting combination of eastern and western species of a variety of bird groups, including raptors, flycatchers, gnatcatchers, wrens, buntings, tanagers, vireos, warblers, blackbirds, sparrows, and finches. Join us for this meeting as Director-Naturalist Mike Champagne recounts the nature center’s visits to this area. |
